Preparing Your C-Store or Gas Station for Winter Weather
In several parts of the country, winter is officially here. Convenience stores and gas stations don’t always have the option for a “Snow Day” that kids celebrate. You provide critical fuel and other necessities to emergency personnel, and those who must travel in harsh, winter conditions. Here are a few things to keep in mind as we enter this season.
Safety First: Customer and Employees
Winter weather can be dangerous, and your facility is often a refuge during those times. Here are some steps to take to keep your facility safe for both your customers and employees.
• Clear walkways of snow and ice build-up. Use a chemical de-icer where possible. Make sure all changes in height like curbs and steps are clearly visible.
• Ensure all lights are fully functional and at an appropriate wattage/brightness. The winter days are shorter, so night visibility is even more important for both walking and vehicle traffic.
• Establish clear safety and emergency plans for winter weather for employees to follow. The plans should be reviewed by all and kept in an easily accessible area. Make sure all employees are equipped with the necessary gear like shovels, de-icers, gloves, hats, etc.
Stocking Up: Cold Weather Essentials
Wayward winter travelers will be looking for essentials to stay warm and comfortable. Be sure to stock up on winter essentials, including the following:
• No-freeze wiper fluid
• Grocery and household essentials like milk, water, bread, toilet paper, baby and pet supplies
• Salt, ice scraps, shovels
• Flashlights and batteries
• Firewood
• Blankets
• First aid kits
• Hot beverage station
Purchase a freeze-resistant wiper fluid and extra squeegees for travelers to use at the pump.
