Here are a few key questions to consider when reviewing floor options.
- Spills: Is the floor likely to experience spills on it? If so, what kinds of spills – chemical, food, etc.? This is important in determining if the floor can be porous or if it will need specialty topcoats to protect against spills.
- Temperature: Is the floor in a temperature-controlled environment? Extremely high and extremely low temperatures (like freezer rooms) require special flooring.
- Traffic: What traffic will the floor experience? Foot, forklift, heavy vehicles, etc. Are pedestrian slips a concern?
- Aesthetics: Is the floor in a high traffic area for external audiences like customers, patients, or students? Does it need to match branding or other color guidelines?
- Existing Floor: What is the current condition of the existing floor? Is it concrete or something else? If the base is stable, there are lots of floor options that can be installed directly over the existing floor. This helps to minimize cost and disruption.
- Safety: In some environments, the floor surface can be a safety concern because of the electricity charged from footsteps. If you’re in a highly sensitive industry, like technology or weapons, this is likely a factor when making flooring decisions.
- Maintenance: What’s your preferred method of maintenance? What is realistic for your organization? Make sure your cleaning/maintenance capabilities align with the selected floor.
With innumerable flooring options in textures, colors, durability, and more, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. These questions should help you narrow the path and find the right solution for your facility.
