SITUATION:
An employee entrance at this industrial facility had become not only an eyesore, but also a safety hazard due to the poor condition of the exterior concrete steps. The concrete was cracked, crumbled and deteriorated to the point where the owners felt their only solution was a complete tear-out and replacement. Because the steps are heavily used Monday through Friday, the job was further complicated by the fact that it would have to be completed over a weekend with employees being able to walk on the steps Monday morning.
SOLUTION:
Simon Surfaces evaluated the condition of the steps and determined a restoration was possible. Technicians began by removing the metal treads from the steps and diamond grinding the existing concrete. They then formed the step faces with lumber and poured a ¼” thick epoxy mortar over them. Once cured, the forms were removed, and an epoxy grout coat was applied to seal the epoxy mortar. Sand was broadcasted across the surface to provide skid resistance. A urethane topcoat was then applied to increase durability and UV stability. Upon request, an orange safety stripe was added on the foot of each step, and another coat of urethane was applied over the stripes.
END RESULT:
The steps were greatly improved, both in terms of safety and aesthetics. The benefits of using Simon Surfaces’ epoxy-based mortar system included:
